Are You A Carer?

Are you providing ongoing unpaid care for someone who:

  • has a chronic or terminal illness?

  • has a disability?

  • has a mental health condition?

  • is someone who is frail due to age?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you may be an unpaid carer.

Who can be a carer?

You may hear people being referred to as an unpaid carer or a family carer. This means caring is not their occupation but something they do as a spouse, partner, parent, sibling, grandchild or even as a friend, or neighbour. You don't have to be related to someone to be called a carer.

What do carers do?

Unlike parenting where a child will become independent, unpaid carers look after someone who needs assistance to keep living at home.

Attending appointments, transport, cooking, organizing medication, shopping, and personal care are all activities a carer may undertake. In some cases, this is a full-time job. With help, some carers also work, study, and care for other people too.

We support all kinds of caring families.

"Connecting to services does definitely help you get through the rough times, because without those services and resources, and even just knowing that they’re there for an emergency, it does take that little bit of pressure off you."

Are you a carer?

It can be difficult to recognise yourself as an unpaid carer as it often feels like you’re doing what you’re meant to be doing as a parent, partner, sibling, child or even friend.
