Dementia and Caring - (3 Session Program) Mornington

This 3 session course is for carers who may be struggling with the changes in their life and relationships since a dementia diagnosis.

During the course, presented by Dementia Australia, you will:

· Gain information about the symptoms of dementia and how they may affect the person you care for

· Discuss the effect that these changes can have on you as the carer, and how you can cope

· Learn how to manage changes in the person you care for and how to help them lead fulfilling lives.

This course will encourage participants to share their experiences within a small group and to listen to and support each other.

Managing Carer Fatigue - (3 Session Program) Mornington

Join us for a series of 3 workshops designed to help you learn techniques to relax, take care of yourself and practice self compassion.

The focus during these workshops will be on simple self care using easy breathing techniques, very gentle movement, guided sitting meditation practice, relaxation techniques, group discussion and learning how to self soothe.

About the Facilitator:
Jo Gibbs is a hospital and university trained registered nurse and experienced yoga and mindfulness teacher. She is passionate about assisting carers to be kind to themselves so that they can continue to care well.

Who Should Attend

The program is for carers who are;

  • Caring for a family member or friend living with dementia

  • Concerned about behaviours such as wandering,restlessness, repetitive questioning, repeating tasks or actions, lack of motivation or boredom

Carers will;

  • Discover ways of using everyday activities to connect, have fun and share meaningful time with the person with dementia

  • Learn strategies that may settle or cease changed behaviours, or assist with a task

  • Receive written information and resources to help implement the activities and strategies at home

  • Exchange ideas and receive support and inspiration from other carers

Research has shown that making specific changes to the home environment can have significant positive impact on a person living with dementia. We explore practical and inexpensive ideas and provide tips to make simple adaptations to your home.

· Ten principles of dementia friendly homes

Aged Care Program (2 session program) - Frankston

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE AGED CARE SYSTEM?

The aged care system is complex and can be confusing.  Be prepared by coming along to a 2 session workshop which explains the many components of aged care. Participants must be able attend both sessions

Presented by Carers Victoria and hosted by Alfred Health Carer Services.

The workshops will include;

This looks at eligibility for services including the Aged Care Assessment, types of services, service providers and costs

26/6/19 - Residential Care

This looks at eligibility for entry into a residential home, how to apply and the cost involved

We’d love to meet you at our Frankston Movie Club

Enjoy a relaxing evening out with other carers on the third Tuesday of the month held at our Alfred Heath Carer Services site from 5.30 pm-8.00 pm.

Movies are usually cinema classics and light supper is provided prior the screening.  There is no cost to carers and the person you care for.  Please be aware that attendant care is not provided and carers are responsible for the person they bring.

Blokes in a Caring Role (4 session program) - Frankston

Dementia Australia and Alfred Health Carer Services are offering a 4 session program which includes information about dementia, changes, communication and discussions about loss and grief associated with becoming a carer.  Participants must be able to attend all sessions which will be held on 6/6/19, 13/6/9, 20/6/19 and 27/6/19. 

The course provides;

  • The chance to meet other men who are caring for someone with dementia

  • EDIE: an immersive experience to ‘walk in the shoes’ of the person with dementia and develop understanding on how and why the person changes in the way they do

  • Learn skills to manage the changes in behaviour and abilities of the person with dementia

  • Explore avenues for supports including family, friends and community services

  • Discuss the impact of dementia on your relationship and your sense of self.  We will explore the experience of grief and loss when someone close to you is living with dementia

  • Formulate a plan to cope better

The program is offered as a small group session where you will be encouraged to share your experiences and listen to and support others

These events offer a fun night in a relaxed and social environment.  Movie screenings are held on last Monday of each month at Classic Residences in Brighton East from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.

  • Learn strategies that may settle or cease changed behaviours, or assist with a task
