Our Services - Carer Support Program - Disability
A regional program offering support to parents/carers of people 0-64 years old with severe or profound disabilities. Are you in a parenting relationship with someone (aged 0-64 years) who has a disability and is living at home?

CareLine 24hours is a telephone service that can:
  • Provide you with information about available services.

  • Arrange short term or emergency in home respite to give you a break.

Carer Support Workers - Disability can:
  • Give you an opportunity to talk confidentially about your issues

  • Provide emotional support centred on your needs as a parent/carer

  • Support you to access existing respite and support services

  • Assist with planning of innovative care options to meet your needs

  • Resource parent/carer support groups

  • Support other services to be more sensitive to the needs and experiences of parents/carers

  • Assist, in some instances, to reduce the cost of respite.

We can also collaborate with service providers to develop new initiatives and provide education and training opportunities for parents/carer across the Southern Region. If you are a worker within the Southern Metro region, please contact the Carer Support Program - Disability to discuss your ideas.

What is Respite?

Respite services aim to offer positive experiences for people with a disability and at the same time give you, their families/carers, a break and some time to yourselves.

We aim to help parents/carers find the balance between caring for yourself and caring for others, by providing you with the support, information and respite you need.

Types of respite services available in the community include:

  • In home support - where a worker comes to your home to care for the person with a disability

  • Out of home support - where a worker supports the person with a disability to be involved in activities outside of the home

  • Day programs - where the person with a disability attends a centre during the day and is supported by staff to become involved in their programs

  • Before and after school care programs

  • Camps and holidays

  • Recreation and leisure activities

  • Residential/facility based respite - where the person with a disability stays overnight in a house with staff who are experienced in working with people with disabilities
