The southern region is made up of the ten local government areas of Bayside, Cardinia, Casey, Frankston, Glen Eira, Greater Dandenong, Kingston, Mornington Peninsula, Port Phillip and Stonnington.

With over 1,126,000 people living in the southern metropolitan region of Melbourne (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 Census) the region represents almost one quarter of Victoria's population, and covers an approximate area of 2,900 square kilometers.
