A note on bushfires - leaving early is the safest option
If you live in a high risk bushfire area, then on days of high fire risk the safest option is to leave early – ideally the day before. But for some Victorians, leaving early is their only safe option – especially for the frail or elderly, people with a physical disability, or those who have problems thinking clearly or acting quickly in a stressful situation.
These people could have problems moving about their property, comprehending warning messages, or evacuating without assistance – so staying to defend their homes from fire just isn’t an option. If someone you know or care for fits this description, you should encourage them to complete the Red Cross Bushfires: Preparing to leave early guide.
People living alone in isolated high risk bushfire areas could also need your help to plan and prepare to leave early. It’s all about communities sharing the responsibility to care for each other – to prepare, act and survive!
